Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on the 24th of August 1972 at Long Beach California. DuVernay had a close relationship with her Aunt Denise she urged DuVernay to develop her creativity and was instilled by the arts. She was a night nurse to allow her aunt the time she required during the working day to pursue her passion for the arts, literature and theater. She showed DuVernay the 1961 movie West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay was educated by her mother about how the art form could be utilized as an instrument for activism. DuVernay grew up with an aunt who was conscious of her social status and taught her how she could use the arts as a way to express her feelings. DuVernay had her summers spent in Lowndes County Alabama, where DuVernay's father was born and was raised. DuVernay's dad recalled the civil rights protests on the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the nearby town of Selma, Alabama. The summers she spent in Selma, Alabama would inspire her later to create a documentary about Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. After graduating she attended in the University of California Los Angeles where she was awarded diplomas in English as well as African American studies. While she was still a student DuVernay began to consider producing in the broadcast media. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being tasked to sit at the home of one member of the jury. She was also asked to examine their junk. Her disappointment was evident in the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose to switch over to the world of public relations. DuVernay got her first job as a publicist at a small production studio right following her college. She was promoted to the position and set up her own PR company that was named The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Her agency launched a number different lifestyle and promotional networks, including Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
